タスク管理とは何か。
その本質を探るべく、英語版 Google で what is task management とググってみました。
結果、50ページ中 8 件ほど定義にヒット（これ以降は task management software の紹介ばかりだったので断念）。
本記事では 8 件それぞれについて定義の引用と意訳をまとめた後、最後に所感を述べます。

所感
ここからは私の所感を雑多に述べます。
Wikipedia オリジナル
Wikipedia の定義が「タスクをライフサイクル全体を通じて管理する」的な意味になっており、これを引用したサイトが多いようです。特にタスク管理ソフトウェアを扱うサイト(Plan.io, Paymo, taimer, ZOHO)はすべてそうでした。
※ちなみに Wikipedia の定義は 2005 年の論文 Challenges for business process and task management がベースになっている模様。しかしこの論文には「What is task management」をはっきりと記した定義がありません。
一方で、方法論を扱ったサイトでは独自の定義を採用しています。ProjectManager.com では「a way of describing how ～」としていますし、Office TIMELINE に至ってはまずタスクの定義(all of the work items and assignments)を述べた後、タスク管理の定義を述べています。
日常生活の文脈は想定していない
どの定義を見ても、ビジネスではなく日常生活の文脈においてタスク管理を使うという発想はありません。
せいぜい応用可能と言っている程度ですね。たとえば ProjectManager.com では
but you’ll also need to manage your home life activities and you can use similar tools.
と「日常生活の活動も類似ツールで管理できるよ」と言っていますし、Paymo でも
Task management is not something you do only at work. Whether you’re planning your next trip or shopping spree, you’re actually managing tasks outside the workplace.
と「旅行の計画や買い物も、仕事場の外にいるというだけで、タスクを管理しているという本質は変わらない」的なことを言っています。

一番気になったのは Plan.io の

これです。
「タスク管理は芸術」とな……？
編集者 Jory MacKay さんの趣味かもしれませんが、考えさせられる一文です。
